I am sick and tired of being a freak show. So what if I am female? So what if I work in a highly male dominated industry? I am damn good, no, awesome at my job which should definitely be the case since I have been developing these skills since childhood. I am a concreter in my family's business. No, I do not work in the office as many have asked after I try to explain what I do. No, it is not easy, I have to work with my father. No, there are not a lot of women out there who throw their bodies into the path of concrete and not care if they get filthy. But I am one and my biggest problem is with the people out there who see me or my mother or any other woman who works in a traditionally male job as oddities, making comments like "shouldn't a man be doing that" or even taking photos of us working without our consent in order to show everybody what strange thing they have found.
I will admit, if I had not been the daughter of a concreter and renovating maniac, then I would not have ended up in this industry. I have spent many years on job sites and even living on some as my parents built homes or renovated them, so to me it is far from unusual. Most of the blokes I have worked with have known me since I was little and they treat me like any other person on site, they yell and swear and joke and work with me. Unfortunately it is the new boys who have no idea of what I am capable of who look at me strange and hesitate to work with me (I do the same to them as I am use to most of them bailing after ten minutes of shovelling). I don't like being treated differently just because I have ovaries. If I was someone who didn't give it my all while at work, or I acted prissy and refused to do certain jobs then yes I can understand why I should be treated differently (I do that to the boys who spend most of their time texting when I need them to be working, then they don't come back for another day of work).
In conclusion it is not unusual for a woman or for a man to be in a profession that is traditionally gender specific. It doesn't matter who you are, just how well you do the job. So have a glass of concrete and harden the fuck up!
