Andrew jumped out and stretched his back. “Lori, we have a roof,” he called out.
“Fuck yeah,” I danced a little. A very little. Because from the ute on the street emerged the man from the pub. The hot man who made me forget all about my hormones for Kent, instead directed those hormones to himself. Oh.
My whole body broke into a flush. I started to imagine things. Sexy things. Things I shouldn’t be imagining with a man I had barely spoken too and was walking up the drive with a sexy curve to his wide lips.
My lips tingled as I stared at his.
“Hi. I think that should cover the drink I owe you,” were the first words out of his mouth.
I stared back dumbly.
Kent and Andrew looked confused as they stood to the side watching us.
The man shoved his hands into his pockets and rocked back on his heels. “Um, we met last week at the pub… I knocked into you… do you remember or do I have the wrong woman?”
“Shit.” Fuck, did I just swear at this sexy beast before me? “I mean. Yeah, that’s me. I was out with work mates.” And I am going to stop talking for the rest of my life.
He smiled. “Well, we spoke on the phone.” Out came his hand.
I took it to mean we should shake hands like an adult greeting. His was warm and large around my little fingers. I liked it a lot. “Alex,” the name popped into my head.
“That’s me.” He didn’t let my hand go.
That was alright. Something buzzed between us, our eyes focused only on the person in front of us, and a smile on both our lips. It took everything for me not to step forward and snuggle into his arms.
“Lori?” A voice beside us broke our connection.
I snapped my head to the side. “What?”
Kent had his arms crossed and was puffing out his chest. “We should get this unloaded while we still have daylight.”
Alex’s hand disappeared. “Right. Let’s do this.” Reaching behind he withdrew a pair of work gloves and slipped them on with ease.
I sighed and pulled mine back on.
We got to work unloading. Two people on one end, walking them around to the back where I had things piled.
Kent forced his way in to be my work buddy. I gave him a punch in the arm. “What the fuck?”
“He’s flirting with you,” he whined and rubbed his arm.
He didn’t respond.
With Shane’s ute emptied we swapped it over with Alex’s, Kent got into drive.
Andrew stood beside me. “What’s going on? It’s like testosterone became air borne.”
“Tell me about it.”
Andrew nudged my shoulder. “Are you hiding a secret like Shane was?”
“No,” I snapped. “We literally bumped into each other as I was leaving the pub.” The corners of my lips lifted again. “He’s attractive.”
“Then let him know that Kent isn’t a threat.”
Sighing, my big brother spelt it out for me. “He’s never done this before and I don’t think it means that he wants to marry you and have babies.”
“Jesus fucking Christ, Andrew. Kent is like a brother.” One I had been attracted to for a little bit mostly because it had been a while.
“Exactly, but he’s acting macho and that’s making Alex think twice.”
“How do you know that?”
“Because I have a penis.”
The ute stopped near us and Alex jumped out. Before Anyone complained I jumped at the tin at the same time as he took hold of an end. No way was I letting him leave thinking I was getting it on with Kent.
Once around the corner of the house I blurted it out. “Kent is a family friend and not my boyfriend.”
Alex blinked. “Oh.” He started to smile again, nice and easy.
“Just so you know.”
“And that was very important information to give to a stranger.”
“Well, I like honesty. You don’t have a girlfriend do you?” We started to move back to the ute again, passing the others.
“No, ma’am.” He chuckled to himself.
“Not that I’m aware of.”
Taking in a deep breath, he stopped me from grabbing the next sheet with a hand on my shoulder. “No to any other person of attachment. I am single.”
“Just checking,” my face was burning hot.
“Do you want to check my medical history also?”
“What do you want to know?” He didn’t miss a beat.
“Last visit to the doctor?”
“Last year, around October. I had tonsillitis.”
“That sucks.” I sympathised.
“Tell me about it. On top of that I had a throat infection.”
“Wow, who did you piss off to get the voodoo doll of hell?”
“I have no fucking clue. But I wish that they would stop poking me in the throat with needles.”
“At least they’re not giving you STI’s with needles to the groin.” I added.
“The small victories in life.”
“Just remember to wear a condom always.”
“I did pay attention during sex ed.”
“But so many people I went to school with didn’t and they now have babies.”
He stopped walking with the sheet of tin and looked back over his shoulder at me. “How did we move from STI’s to babies? I get that they’re both made in the same general area, but one is cute and the other is scary.”
“Oh please,” I rolled my eyes knowing where this was going. “STI’s are cute?”
“I was talking about babies.”
Oh, I smiled in embarrassment this time. I guess this guy was keeping me on my toes.
