The gang of Goonies, starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan, are a bunch of kids and all go on an adventure to find the famed treasure of One Eye Willy and also to escape the Fratelli who want to kill them and take the gold for themselves. But see, the Goonies need this gold so their parents can pay off their debts and keep their homes.
Child actors are everywhere. It’s time to play the game of pick the actor and match them with their roles as grown-ups. How many do you recognise?
Even though it is kid friendly, it does have some adult worries and show how they can impact on kids when things aren’t going right. They pick up on tough times and want to help because they love their parents and don’t want to lose their homes. That is the only serious thing ever mentioned in this film. Then we go off on a far-fetched adventure.
It is silly. A lot of jokes about boys and their bits like One Eyed Willy, or the slapstick action of getting hit in the nuts. There is even a toilet joke. Of course. There are a couple of grown up jokes, but the majority are ones that eight and up will have a good laugh at before the adults.
For what it is, I can’t fault it. It is fun. I mean, what kid doesn’t want to find a map and head off on their bike with their friends and do something crazy like finding a pirate ship? What kid doesn’t like booby-traps? Or elaborate mechanisms to open doors with ropes from far away? We’ve all wondered how to do it but never could get it right and so watched movies like this over and over to learn. Admit it, you liked the idea of setting a booby-trap for your room to keep out siblings or nosy parents.
This is a classic and it’s hard to top it. It’s meant to be corny and unbelievable. When I watched Super 8, from Spielberg, I was disappointed. It lacked the child-like wonder the Goonies have in bucket loads. You can’t beat this, not at all.
Even if you’re all grown up, sit down and watch this. Get the snacks first though, every time they mention pizza, chocolate, or ice-cream I wanted to go find some and eat it right along with the characters. And of course, educate the next generation by showing this to them. Rated PG so no parent should be an asshole and say no to the Goonies.
