It's Samantha Baker's (Molly Ringwald) sweet sixteen and her family has forgotten it. Which sucks. Sam has a crush on Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) but he doesn't know she exists, or so she thinks. Her sister is getting married. And she gave her panties to a geek (Anthony Michael Hall). *Time to scream*
This is a concoction of characters behaving badly and extraordinary events. It is great. Amazing. A step down from Ferris Bueller, but still up there.
However, I do have a problem with the cavalier opinion to sexual assaults. "Heck, I've got Caroline passed out cold. I could violate her ten different ways." Jake said. "What's stopping you?" The replies in all seriousness.
That disturbs me.
It's good and I like playing pick the young actor (John and Joan Cusack pop up). It's a nice little snap shot of American life in the 80s. But I am unsettled by the geek having drunk non-memorable sex with the passed out prom queen. Sexual assault normalised.
