In this century feminists are still seen as a joke; they’re bitches, lesbians, sluts, baby killers. This opinion isn’t helped by the little education on the subject in high school or the “extremists” who are the clichés.
When feminism was birthed there had to be extreme women who fought against the norm. Mary Wollstonecraft, Sojourner Truth, Henrietta Dugdale and Anne Lowe. They were strong, determined and fearless. Now women can work, vote, live outside of the family, control when they have children and how many, be educated, own property and most importantly women are no longer the property of men. Because of the extremists of the past the rules have changed. We salute them.
However, not everyone has to be an extremist to be a feminist.
As long as there are options, even if individuals may not believe in them, but as long as they are there for all, women can make the best choices for their situations. Abortions, divorce, further education, childcare, the vote; by making a simple choice women are being feminists.
I am grateful to be a woman living in Australia, though more things need to be made available; equal pay, same sex marriage, tasers. Then there are things that must change socially; equality in the workplace, no more assumptions of a woman’s place and no more violence against women!
Until no-one cares if it’s a man or a woman tradie, politician, police officer, hairdresser then extremist women will be needed to fight publically and ordinary women making choices.
