Wow, what are we paying our taxes for? To support time wasters in parliament on hundreds of dollars per year? This is bullshit.
Back to the main reason for writing this (politics is a whole other subject for my soap box). Same sex marriage should be legalised.
Anyone who says it goes against their religious beliefs for them to agree with this is then discriminating and taking away the dignity of another person based purely on their sexual preference. Hey, that’s illegal in itself. There has been a separation of State and Church for a reason, so as not to force the views of one organisation onto anyone else so we can be a society of many equal people. So religion isn’t a reason to be stopping this from moving through. If that’s your only defence, that the bible or any other written scripture says marriage is between a man and a woman only, put that book down. Gays have always existed, they’ve only had to conceal themselves in order to survive societies dictated by religion that would force them to leave their loved ones or execute them. We’re in the 21st Century and we no longer think the world is either flat or the centre of the universe. Next argument, please.
The people want this. It’s clear, they have done marches, polls have shown great support for it, and there are so many gay couples living together already. The world hasn’t ended because they’re carving out a “normal life with a white picket fence”. So what’s the hold up with this legalisation? We acknowledge them, Mardi Gras happens every year with so much pride. Not to mention it pumps money into Sydney for that weekend. Imagine what same sex marriages could do.
It could help our economy. As soon as it’s legalised, there will be a rush for everyone to get married. There’s suddenly overwhelming amounts of work happening in the wedding industry. Dresses and suits have to be made, cakes baked, music played, civil celebrants to speak, venues hired, photographers, hotel rooms… I can keep going and still miss a whole heap of people who would benefit from this. But there’s your boost in economy.
And it would make gay people happy.
And happiness is important.
Don’t be the sadistic dick who makes others suffer because you’re not happy.
Personally, I see marriage as a legally binding contract between two consenting people. That’s it. Nothing about religion. Nothing about ownership of another person. Nothing about preventing sin of the flesh. Just an agreement to love and be faithful to each other.
To me, it’s pretty pointless to get married. If you’re already in love, then you should be faithful. Period. Getting married is just a show.
But it is important to other people and we should all have the option to do it. I don’t live in a society that dictates who I should marry, when I should marry, if I should be kept in the household and obey my husband no matter what. I live in a society where I have the right to speak my mind, live on my own, work, and get married only if I want to. That’s a right. So legalise same sex marriage.
As a straight woman, I’m part of the population who doesn’t care what sexuality the couple is, just let them get married and move on.
