Like I wanted to kiss him.
What the fuck?
Don’t think about the guy in the room next door. Don’t think about the fact there is only a sheet hung up for privacy since the gyprock was gone and that he could push the sheet to the side and look at me the same way, or that I could push it aside and ask him if… did he… was it just me?
You’re overreacting, Lori. Pull your shit together and forget it. Nothing happened.
There was tingling.
You haven’t had sex in a while, you need to find a partner pronto before you mistaken Kent for something and throw yourself at him and thus ruining your perfect friendship. This isn’t a romance novel where he’s secretly pinning away for you.
That’s right, Lori.
The voices in my head finished the battle and I sighed. This was just cabin fever, he was the only male that wasn’t related to me that I spent a lot of time around so my hormones were acting up.
That idea made me settle a little and I slept well for the night.
And it wasn’t too bad as I was rushing around in the morning getting ready for work when he stepped out of his room dressed only in his jocks.
Hormones, settle the fuck down.
All I wanted to do was casually brush up against him every time we passed each other and maybe rub a little more specifically on certain areas.
“Good morning,” Andrew threw open the door to the kitchen and strode in.
“Morning,” I mumbled.
“Cranky this morning sis?”
He had to tease me? I rolled my eyes at him and jammed more of my home made lunch into my purse. “When do you have the girls again?”
“This afternoon. And then over the weekend. They’re looking forward to helping on the building site.”
“Hmm.” I couldn’t really muster any real emotional response to that. I loved them but… my attention was still firmly fixed on the man at my kitchen table eating breakfast. The man I couldn’t look at without fear.
What if he saw my desire?
Desire? Really, Lori? Are we using such terminology now?
“Have fun at work Kent, and Andrew, don’t destroy the house. I’m off.”
“See ya,” Kent called after me.
At work it was hard to concentrate.
“How’s the house coming?” My boss asked me during a slow period.
I turned to her. “Good. Stretching every penny that I have to cover the costs without adding to my original loan.”
“Must be good having family working for nothing.”
“Well, I’m losing one of my workers today.” I confessed.
“My friend who has been living with me, working for board, he’s starting with the bakery.”
She frowned. In front of her the papers were neatly stacked into categories; to be reviewed, already reviewed. “Does that mean he’s going to pay rent soon?”
“But he won’t be working for you.”
“No, he’s trying to save up so he can travel again.” Oh those words were hard to say. Kent was leaving once again and I wouldn’t see him for ages, again. “Totally off topic, but are you going out tonight to the pub?”
“I was thinking about it.”
“Mind if I join you?”
Her eyes crinkled in the corners. “Can you afford it?”
“Fuck it, I’ll get my tits out and make the guys pay for my drinks.”
She laughed. “I knew there was a reason why I hired you. You’re like me when I was your age, just a little softer.”
I laughed with her. This was going to be an experience.
Ducking home, I rushed to get to my wardrobe. “Hey guys,” I called out.
Kent poked his head around the frame from the kitchen. The house smelt heavenly like deep fried chicken. “I’m using the portable deep fryer for dinner. Won’t be long now.”
“Okay.” I meekly said and went into the bathroom.
The not having walls was problematic when you needed to spend an hour in there shaving legs and washing hair and then styling it. Again, there was a sheet hung up for privacy. Or else I would’ve had to go to the caravan.
“What are you doing, Lori?”
I cringed. “Getting ready.” Kent was only a sheet away from seeing me naked. “Why?”
“Ready for what? We’re not having visitors for dinner are we?” There was a little panic in his voice.
“No, I’m going out for a drink with some work mates after dinner.”
The fryer hissed.
“It’ll only be for a couple of hours.”
What should I be thinking? Nope, don’t answer that inner voice, right now my brain is really confused because I am finding Kent attractive for some strange reason and I am not falling into the trap of over thinking and analysing something that never should’ve been analysed.
“How was work?” Change of topic.
“Good.” He responded.
“Have they given you shifts?”
“Yeah. This week I have the shifts that no-one has filled yet. Some morning and some arvo. But I did get told that at the end of each day they throw out some of the baked goods they can’t move the next day and if I want them I just have to take them.”
I smiled to myself. “Everyone knows that’s a perk of working at the bakery.”
“I didn’t,” he sounded defensive. “So, that means we’ll have lots of baked goods in the house.”
“Are you intentionally trying to fatten me up?” In the bathroom, I looked down at my body and despaired. It had been a while since I had done anything and it showed on my waist. More baked goods weren’t going to help. But at least the food would be free.
Kent took a minute before answering. “Dinner is ready.”
