18 year olds Hibiki, Daichi and Nita are given a choice of life or death after a train accident, a choice given to them by the app Death Face (that would be handy if I had a smart phone) which has a couple of other functions, one being a way to digitally summon demons.
Armageddon has begun and for seven days humanity must face trials, fighting seven septentriones using the summoned demons. Only once humanity has proven itself can the survivors be granted an audience with Polaris aka God.
I came to this without prior knowledge of the DS game by the same name. So I'm not sure how it lines up with that.
But I did thoroughly enjoy it. I thought the story line was great and tapped into my survivor instinct as I watched. Yes the characters aren't developed with complex and tragic background stories. But that is kind of refreshing, it makes them feel more real, like ordinary people who live ordinary lives. After all we meet these characters and get to know them for a brief time which feels realistic for a doomsday situation, focus on the current problem not the past. Little bits are given to us which heightens the importance of the trust and information revealed.
I think it's the characters reactions to the situations that we need to focus upon and get to know them for their inner strength and humanity.
It is filled with the messages of hope, free will, friendship and taking chances to make changes.
Love the artwork and music and I want my own Byakko demon.
