“I think I need to grab a teddy bear for security.” Don’t you dare show too much emotion. Keep it together!
Eva chuckled. “It’s not that traumatic.”
“How do you know? You haven’t watched it yet either.” Wendy grumbled. “What if it’s like the end of Yuri on Ice? I was in tears, it was so gay and exactly what everyone had been asking for at the start of the show.”
“Hmm, gay pair skating… that had been the perfect ending.”
“And so unexpected.”
“We all made the wish thinking it would never happen.” Eva tucked her hair behind her ear. “But this show is completely different. We’ve been laughing all the way through.”
I want team sempai to win Kae-san’s heart.
Her head nodded and she started to squint.
“You’re looking very determined.” Eva snorted.
“Serious thoughts about team Sempai.”
“Let’s do this then. Have you got it open in another tab?”
Wendy nodded. “It’s all set. Skype after?”
Eva gave her a thumbs up.
Twenty minutes later, Wendy was striking every key on the computer with deadly force, it rattled the insides.
“What just happened?” Eva’s face filled the screen. “That didn’t just happen? Was that for real?”
“I can’t believe it,” were the only words she could push out before screaming. “Five! And one was even a girl she could share her otaku life with!”
“But… I get the title was Kiss Him, Not Me… That seemed a little too convenient and boring an end to it all.” Eva pouted. “The suitors all grew as characters, but she remained the same naïve girl from the start. I don’t know if I should be happy she didn’t change to fit in or…” She left the sentence hanging.
“But she totally didn’t care about any of them! There’s a manga, right? Have you read it? Do you think it ended the same way? Damn, why didn’t we read it and get a head start?” Wendy leant back from the computer and crossed her arms. “This sucks.”
“A real let down. Even the end of Ouran High Host Club, the ultimate reverse harem with an oblivious main character, showed her emotions for Sempai and made her choice clear even though none of it was going to really change a thing for the group dynamics. The writers had her grow.”
Wendy bit her lip. “Too obsessive?”
“Not at all. This is a safe place to vent and get all pervy about anime hotness. It’s just…” She paused, taking a moment to drink some water.
“It’s just what?” Wendy fidgeted with the hem of her shirt, out of sight of the computer.
“I’ve never watched Ouran High Host Club.”
What is that stabbing feeling in my chest? Is this a heart attack? “Can you repeat that? I think there’s something wrong with my hearing.”
Eva sighed. “You spoiled the end of Ouran High Host Club for me because I’ve never watched it. Now I know she ends up with Sempai.”
“I don’t know if I should be apologising, explaining that there is a lot more to it and it wasn’t exactly an ‘ending up’ situation, or screaming at you for letting something so fundamental to the reverse harem genre slip by you? It’s like the introduction to the fantasy! How could you?” Wendy felt her eyes well up as she stared at her friend. “Next you’ll say you haven’t seen a Hayao Miyazaki film.”
“I’m not that much of an uncultured fiend.”
“Good.” Wendy nodded her approval only slightly.
