I’m smiling for no reason.
I laughed out loud at some of the best jokes in print.
I feel relaxed.
There are five hundred words left to be written for my story and I need to get to sleep soon (I’m writing this at 9.26pm) but I’m not stressed. There isn’t a knot in my shoulders making it a chore to sit at the desk. In fact, I feel a little like jelly that’s slumped. It’s all good, nothing to worry about, just do it and yeah. Everything will be fine.
Study after study into reading has shown that it reduces stress and in some cases, it can extend lives. It’s fun to read these articles, but I’m already sold on the medium. Give me a good book, okay, give me a library to read and I will always be content. Telling me that there are benefits other than enjoyment just makes it more important to my life.
How can people live without ever picking up a book? How do they spend their time? Are they always watching television? They’re being told a story there, though with very little effort as your mind kind of shuts down as you watch. Even though your mind is more active while reading, I at least, find it more relaxing. It doesn’t matter what I read, as long as it’s fiction and not my own work. And it has to be good, otherwise my mind shuts down. Completely.
I don’t know why people fear reading and would prefer to veg out in front of a screen instead. Are they afraid of their imagination? Do they see it as work? Or is it the silence? Because they’re wrong. It isn’t silent when you read, your mouth will be closed and you’re not interacting with other people, but the characters are talking inside your head. That’s the power of your imagination, you can hear them talking and you can see them doing things and you can feel their emotions. And it isn’t work; it’s fun.
Reading is the cure. Reduce stress, learn empathy, and enjoy things. But really, it’s an escape from reality that we all need once in a while.
A good book is the cure to life.
Find the time you can spare to start reading a book for pleasure. Don’t let anyone bully you into reading something that doesn’t interest you, it doesn’t matter if it isn’t a bestseller or a classic, don’t be judged for reading popular fiction. Find something you like and read. Administer the cure liberally.
