Every other time I run into an acquaintance they ask me a variation of a question to justify why I’m doing what I’m doing and not doing what they think I should be doing.
“Didn’t go to work today?”
“Why haven’t you put your name down to volunteer for next Friday?”
“What do you do with yourself?”
“Just watching anime and having a lazy day?”
Guess what? I am not obligated to answer any of those questions. It isn’t rude of me not to. It’s rude of you to have an assumption.
“My work hours vary depending on what the job entails, so if you see me down town in the afternoon, I’ve already been to work and gotten shit done. Have you been slacking off at your cushy salary waste of time?”
“My time outside of the volunteer organisation is my own and I don’t have to explain how I spend it. I give my personal time when I can. When I cannot, I am entirely entitled to apologise and say not that day. Trying to bully me into it will result in you looking like a fool when I tell you to get over yourself. And if anyone even thinks of signing me up without my expressed permission, there will be a broken nose. If you want volunteers, ask the people without a day job.”
“I do what I want with my time.”
“Again, I do what I want with my time.”
When I’m working, then I need to be able to justify what I’m doing and why it takes longer to do it, only to my boss.
When I’m volunteering, I only have to explain my actions when in my uniform and on duty.
The rest of the day is mine to do with how I see fit. If I want to spend it reading technical articles online to educate myself, then I’ll do that. If I want to do my university assignments, then I’ll do that. If I want to write a new story, then I’ll do that. If I’m tired and need to have some down time reading, I am entitled to do that because it’s my time.
So get your nose out of my business and grow the fuck up. If you think I’m meant to be working all the time until I am “allowed” to have a small break, while you seem to think it’s alright to be on your phone while at work doing nothing but scrolling social media, it’s alright for you to hire a cleaner because you’re too lazy to vacuum your own home, it’s alright for you to smirk because you think you’ve caught me doing something you think I shouldn’t be doing, then you’re a bigger dickhead than I gave you credit for.
I will not deny nor confirm any of your suspicions because a person with such a narrow mindset will only ever believe what they want to believe. I owe you no justification of my time or my interests. I’m only regretting I’ve had to waste time even acknowledging these kinds of dickheads.
